"We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true. And we are in Him who is true--even in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life." (1 John 5:20) Our understanding of God is the answer to prayer; getting things from God is God's indulgence of us. When God stops giving us things, He brings us into the place where we can begin to understand Him. As long as we get from God everything we ask for, we never get to know Him, we look upon Him as a blessing machine that has nothing to do with God's character or with our characters. It is not sufficient for us to say, "Oh yes, God is love." We have to KNOW He is love; we have to struggle through until we do see He is love and justice, then our prayer is answered. How much am I like a spoiled child who expects to get everything I want from God, my Father? Do I want the gifts more than the Giver of gifts? | | | |
